In AP CP BL, Thomas Weski talks about Walker Evans' exhibition American Photographs at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He installed it overnight with a friend: "They found different ways to present his pictures on site, trimmed prints and glued them on cardboard, combined framed and unframed pictures into a presentation which diverged from the order of the pictures in the book (published on occasion of the exhibition), and constructed a new narrative." This happened in 1938 and Evans was considered a real pioneer for his installation. But El Lissitzky's works Proun Room and the Abstract Cabinet were respectively conceived in 1923 and 1926. Thomas Weski remarks: "Both examples count as milestones in the history of artists' spaces; they represent innovative forms of display, opening new possibilities of interaction and new perspectives for the viewer."
This book is the German edition of "El Lissitzky, Beyond the Abstract Cabinet" published by Schirmer Mosel in collaboration with the Sprengel Museum Hannover.
