PUBLISHING
ahorn books is a Berlin-based curatorial and publishing project focused on the theory of photography, visual and cultural criticism, artist’s books, photo literature and experimental writing. Founded in 2016 by Daniel Augschöll and Anya Jasbar.
ahorn books was created as an organic extension of the online platform Ahorn Magazine. From 2008 to 2015, Ahorn Magazine offered a curated online space for emerging photographers and an extensive collection of original written content about photography, featuring interviews, essays, book reviews, and other experimental articles.
Our current catalog offers two series of publications, Ahorn Paper and Ahorn Archive, dedicated to the theory of photography and an in-depth understanding of different photographic practices. It also offers a selection of artist’s books, multiples, and artist’s editions.
We often collaborate with artists and other publishers in the production of our titles. Our recent collaborations include Osservatorio Fotografico and Roma Publications. In addition, we organize and host workshops, educational projects, and artist-in-residence programs.
ONLINE BOOKSHOP
Our bookshop is intended to connect people and books. Offering both new and used books, we strongly believe in the circularity of books and their precious knowledge. We regularly select and curate collections of books on various themes and interests, offering curated reading lists in connection with our own publications and research topics. We also want to create an accessible platform for visual and media theory, cultural study, the theory of photography and design, and interconnections between literature and visual arts. Each book available for sale in our bookshop, once out of stock, will be available in our library in Berlin. It is would be possible to visit the library by appointment from Spring/Summer 2023.
It is important for us to try to connect directly with artists and publishers, so we are always happy to share resources and help artists and publishers to distribute their work through our platform whenever possible. For this reason, we created the section We Recommend where we feature books that we highly suggest and recommend to our readership.
From time to time we offer also rare and collectible books. For each book sold in this section, we’re donating a percentage of the final sale price (except shipping and taxes) for a good cause. In the last few years, we supported: Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation, Deutsches Rotes Kreuz e.V. Nothilfe Ukraine, The Garage Gallery for US National Network of Abortion Funds.
